Will this mount fit my TV? It starts with a simpler question: are TV wall mounts universal? Our reading, not VESA’s wording: the text we reviewed does not settle that question. VESA has an overview of its Flat Display Mounting Interface (FDMI) standard. This article sets out what the text we reviewed says, and what it leaves out. We haven’t tested any mounts or TVs for this article; the facts below come from that text.

What VESA’s Standard Covers
The text we reviewed says the purpose of the FDMI standard is “to define mounting interface standards for Flat Displays (FDs) such as flat panel monitors, flat displays and flat TVs.”
It covers flat displays with viewing areas from 4 inches to 90 inches, measured diagonally. It is designed to support a broad range of mounting options, including desktop, wall, overhead, mobile and specialty mounting.
One of its stated objectives is to define “a set of corresponding standards that describe interface mounting pads, wall mount brackets and other mounting apparatus to be provided by mounting equipment manufacturers.”
VESA’s stated benefits, in the text, are low-cost standardized mounting interfaces, full mounting and/or positioning flexibility, and standardized mounting apparatus.
VESA Size and Weight Ranges
The six parts
The standard is split into six parts, A to F. Parts B to F each apply to flat displays in a set viewing-area range that weigh up to a stated limit. Part A is open, for a potential future standard, so the text gives no size or weight for it. For displays from 31 to 90 inches, Part F specifies a multi-hole mounting interface set out in Part F, Section 7. Parts D and E allow center and/or edge options.
| VESA part | Display viewing area (diagonal) | Display weight limit stated for the part |
|---|---|---|
| A | Not stated | Not stated |
| B | 4 to 7.9 in | Up to 2 kg (4.4 lb) |
| C | 8 to 11.9 in | Up to 4.5 kg (10 lb) |
| D | 12 to 22.9 in | Up to 14 kg (30.8 lb) |
| E | 23 to 30.9 in | Up to 22.7 kg (50 lb) |
| F | 31 to 90 in | Up to 113.6 kg (250 lb) |

What the weight figures mean
The text does not mention mount load ratings. The weight figures are VESA’s limits for the display class each part covers.
So, Are TV Wall Mounts Universal?
Our reading, not VESA’s wording: the text we reviewed describes a standard for TV-size displays and for their mounts, so a mount and TV that both follow it are meant to line up.
Our reading, not VESA’s wording: the text we reviewed does not say that every mount or TV follows the standard, so it does not by itself answer “universal?”
What the Text We Reviewed Does Not Say
The text does not give the hole-pattern dimensions. For displays from 31 to 90 inches it points to Part F, Section 7, and that section was not part of the text we reviewed.
It does not describe wall mounts as universal or interchangeable, or say they are not.
It does not say whether a given TV or a given mount follows the standard.
It does not mention curved-back or recessed-hole TVs, or mounts that are not built to the VESA standard.
It does not explain how to check that a mount fits a TV, and it gives no safety or installation advice.
