Turning a Roku TV off with the power button isn’t the same as restarting it. Roku’s own support guidance draws that line and describes a separate system restart. This guide shows how to restart Roku TV in the two ways Roku describes, by unplugging the TV or from the Settings menu, and what Roku says to check first.

How to Restart Roku TV: Two Ways

Roku’s system restart guide also applies to other Roku devices. This article covers Roku TVs only, and only the system restart.

By unplugging the TV

This is the method Roku lists first. A system restart, it says, is performed by removing the power cord from the device for at least 10 seconds before plugging it back in.

From the Settings menu

If reaching the power cord is inconvenient, Roku says you can restart from the Settings menu instead, as long as you can control the TV with the remote or the free Roku mobile app. The path Roku gives:

  • Press Home on your remote.
  • Select Settings, then System.
  • Select Power, then System restart.

Roku adds that if you don’t see a Power submenu, you should skip to the next step, which is System restart.

Check This Before You Restart

For a Roku TV specifically, Roku says to check first whether the TV responds to the physical buttons on its bezel, and to make sure those buttons are working. Roku’s guide doesn’t say what to do if they aren’t, so this guide doesn’t guess.

Roku also says that if you can’t control the device, it’s worth trying new matching batteries in the remote first. If the remote itself is the problem, our guide to how to reset a Roku remote covers it by remote type.

Restarting Isn’t the Same as Turning It Off

Roku says a system restart is not the same as pressing the power button on the remote or the physical power button on the TV.
