A TCL Google TV stuck in a reboot loop might sit on a logo, show a recovery menu, or restart again and again. TCL Support has a guide for exactly this situation, How to Troubleshoot a TCL Google TV in Recovery Mode, and this page walks through it in order. We haven’t tested these steps.

TCL Google TV Stuck in a Reboot Loop: What TCL’s Page Covers

TCL describes three symptoms: the TV shows the Android Recovery screen, stays on the TCL or Google TV logo, or restarts again and again. In those cases, TCL says, the TV may be having a startup or software issue.

TCL asks you to work through its steps in order. It also warns that the exact menus, button positions and recovery routine can differ depending on your TV’s model and its software. This guide covers only startup trouble: the logo, the recovery screen and repeated restarts.

Before You Start: What a Factory Reset Erases

TCL’s final troubleshooting step is a factory reset, and TCL says it erases information saved on the TV:

  • Google accounts and profiles
  • Downloaded apps and their sign-ins
  • Wi-Fi information
  • Picture and sound adjustments
  • Other customized settings

After a reset, you have to go through the Google TV setup process again.

TCL also gives a warning about the recovery menu: don’t pick “Apply update from USB” unless TCL Support has given you software made for your exact TV model. According to TCL, installing incompatible software may keep the TV from working correctly.

Step 1: Check the Physical Power Button

TCL starts with the hardware. The physical Power button may be on the bottom, back or side of the TV; check that it isn’t jammed or held down. TCL also asks you to make sure the TV isn’t laid flat, that its feet or stand are fitted properly, and, for a wall-mounted TV, that nothing leans on the buttons.

The reason, per TCL, is that a button pressed continuously may push the TV into recovery mode or make it restart unexpectedly.

Step 2: Unplug the TV and Restart It

Next, pull the plug and leave the TV unpowered for a full minute at minimum. Then connect it straight to a working wall outlet and turn it on. For the time being, TCL says to keep power strips, surge protectors and extension cords out of the chain.

Cutting power can clear a temporary startup problem, TCL explains, and using the wall outlet helps rule out a problem with an outside power accessory. If the TV starts normally, no further steps are needed. If the recovery screen comes back or the TV stays on the logo, continue to the next step.

Step 3: Choose the Reboot Option in the Recovery Menu

If the recovery screen is showing, highlight the reboot entry, the one whose label starts with “Reboot system”, and select it with the remote or the buttons on the TV. The restart can take several minutes.

On some models the remote may not respond in recovery mode, TCL cautions, so the buttons on the TV may be needed: Volume to move through the menu and Power to choose.

TCL says this tries a normal start and leaves your apps, accounts and settings in place. If the TV drops back into recovery mode or stays on the logo, the page moves on to the factory reset.

Step 4: Get Into Recovery Mode if It Doesn’t Appear

If the TV is stuck on the logo and no recovery menu appears, TCL’s method is to unplug the TV, press and hold its physical Power button, and keep holding it while you plug the TV back in. Let go when the recovery screen appears.

TCL says the physical button can start recovery mode without depending on the TV’s normal software or remote connection. It adds that recovery routines differ between models, so if the menu still doesn’t appear, don’t keep experimenting with button combinations TCL hasn’t verified. TCL Support can give you the routine that fits your model.

Step 5: Factory Reset, Only if the Reboot Failed

TCL says to use a factory reset only if the reboot option didn’t solve the problem. From the recovery menu:

  1. Select “Wipe data/factory reset”.
  2. Confirm by selecting Yes or Factory data reset.
  3. Let the reset run to completion.
  4. If the TV doesn’t restart by itself, select the entry starting with “Reboot system” again.
  5. Go through the Google TV setup process.

Keep the TV plugged in while the reset runs. TCL notes that interrupting it could cause additional software problems. As for why the reset can help, TCL says it removes saved data that may be damaged or may be keeping Google TV from starting.

After the TV Starts Normally

Once setup is finished, TCL suggests checking for available software updates: open Settings, then System, then About, then System update. The stated reason is that updated software can include fixes that help keep the startup problem from returning.

When to Contact TCL Support

TCL says to get in touch if any of these apply:

  • Recovery mode doesn’t appear.
  • The TV keeps returning to the recovery screen.
  • The factory reset doesn’t finish.
  • The TV stays on the TCL or Google TV logo.
  • An error message appears during startup.

Have the TV’s model number and serial number ready, plus a photo of the screen and a note of what you’ve already tried. TCL notes that recovery mode frequently gets a TV working again when the trouble was a short-lived software or startup glitch, and that if neither a restart nor a factory reset helps, TCL Support can decide the next step for your specific model.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my TCL Google TV stuck in a reboot loop?

TCL’s page says only that the TV may be having a startup or software issue. Elsewhere it mentions a continuously pressed button, a temporary startup problem, an outside power accessory and possibly damaged saved data, but it doesn’t say which applies to your TV.

What if the remote doesn’t work in recovery mode?

On some models, TCL says, the remote may not work there, and you may need to use the TV’s Volume buttons to move through the menu and its Power button to select.
